world peace jam

When we moved into our lovely wee house our garden was a deserted wasteland nightmare. We’ve since done heaps to our garden and it is now producing plenty of yummy treats for us. But there was one tree that was already here which has produced a bumper surprise crop for us. And that’s our plum tree. It has produced so much fruit we don’t know what to do with it all. But I’ve been trying.

This is what the branches looked like. When we harvested it, we just held a big sarong underneath and shook the branches and got hundreds of yummy plums.

I decided to try out a few recipes to broaden my domestic goddess repertoire. First up I made some jam. A while back when we were in Newcastle we went to this cafe and decided to get jam on toast. When we asked what sort of jam they had the waitress noncholantly told us that they had the best jam in the world. How can you say no to that?

And it was! It was rhubarb and vanilla jam and it was absolutely heavenly.

So I decided to try and make plum and vanilla jam. I found this recipe and we got to work stoning the plums (that’s what cricket is for….).

Here’s the cooking in process

After trying the jam we decided that it was a close equal to the previous best jam in the world and figured that this could actually be the solution to world peace. If only everyone could eat such yummy wonderful foods, we’d be less inclined to want to blow each other up. Well maybe that’s slightly utopian but you gotta be optimistic about these things…

So I called it World Peace Jam – Plum and Vanilla Luv Filla!

I used some pretty pink fabric with skull and cross bones for the top. And even made a label (quickly)

I also made some Chinese Plum Sauce. It came out a bit vinegary but still pretty good. I mix a bit of it in with Tara’s veges to make it a bit tastier for her and she loves it.

Finally I made some plum and apple crumble with vanilla added again. It was really good but very very intense. We needed lots of cream to eat it, luckily we had plenty left over from Christmas!

We’ve still got a few plums left and there’s another couple of branches left on the tree so I might get to make some more stuff too. So stay tuned.

The next crop to explode out of the garden is chillies.  We’ve got a small pile growing in the kitchen and half a ton left to ripen so anyone with any amazing chilli recipes, let me know.

Yay for home made produce!

you are such the awesome domestic goddess. I tend to leave the delicious jam cooking to Kerry, as he is much more patient with all the sterilising of jars etc. It’s nice to have your own garden is’nt it, safe from the greedy arms of the landlords eviction notice. We have been scoffing up plenty of fruits again this year, and had masses of gooseberries and blackcurrants to get thru. I was especially pleased and smug when I noticed tiny little packets of gooseberries for $4 in the superfarket.

That jam sounds so tasty. And definitely yay to home made!

I grew up in the country and remember how much better the home grown things taste compared to the stuff you can buy in stores. We grew vegetables, picked berries and mushrooms in the forest and raised pigs for meat and chicken for eggs. It feels good to know how all those things are really supposed to taste and to have seen the whole process, from seed to finished dish on the table.

I live in the city now, but I’ll have to get a garden soon so I can grow my own crops too…
