People like you just fuel my fire

feminazi crew

Okay, so I know I shouldn’t let jerks like Steven Wells (that Kakariki mentioned in her latest post) piss me off as much as they do, but I just couldn’t help myself. It is probably stupid to give him the attention he so obviously craves, by letting his sexist punk scene rambles annoy me. But since I am one of those humorless feminist crafters that he’s so intimidated by, and I had some time to spend stitching yesterday, I decided to make him a little present. Think I’m gonna send it to him together with a copy of the SCUM manifesto.

So, here I am, stumbling around the internet, and I come across this great site. How excited I am to find it! Great, creative crafting that falls in line with my own crafting ideals and agendas. But then, I saw this cross stitch and was so sad to see the word “nazi” identified with the feminist movement and used as retaliation against an uneducated nay-sayer. I read the article that spurred the stitch, and for sure, there is motivation to be had, but is it really appropriate to use the word nazi in any context other than the historical one it belongs to?

I did actually think twice about this after I finished the cross stitch, but decided that the link between the cross stitch and the article was worth it. The original plan was to use his own “knitting nazis” but since I’m not a knitter, I changed it to something in the same terminologhy, that I’m pretty sure he’s familiar with. It wouldn’t suprise me at all if a guy that thinks lack of humor is the biggest problem with nazi ideology also now and then refers to feminists as “feminazis”…

Thanks for the praise and constructive critisism!

I think that we can do better though. I think that is my point.
It wouldn’t surprise me either if he did use the term, but that doesn’t make it appropriate to reproduce. I understand the concept of reclaiming terms, or using them ironically in order to take power away from an oppressor, but I personally wouldn’t rejoice if this were the term feminists were able to reclaim. I guess i just think that we need to go above the language of our oppressors.

Still love the site, still love the stitching, and loving that this conversation is even happening.
