Thanks for your lovely comments both of you!

Totally agree Sam. It feels like there's thousands of makers out there making little sweat shops in their homes in order to stop sweatshops. Fucking for virginity maybe?

I've noticed that thinking about truly supporting artists has had a major impact on my purchasing behaviour. If I see something I think is genuinely innovative and well made I'm finding more and more that I think of far off birthdays and christmas lists and baby arrivals.

Handmade is good but so much of it seems to be the same thing. So when I see people creating really interesting stuff I try harder to actually support that artist by buying something off them. I know the gift recipient (if it's not actually me..) will enjoy the uniqueness of it. But I also know that it has a big effect on the maker.

For me, it's just not enough to say 'fight boring', as a consumer I have to pro actively seek and support interesting.

Thanks again for your comments, hope you both can dart out of the shadows again!

The on line markets are often filled with the 'inspirations' of the public, whatever they're buying at the moment. Often the best art is something that is seen out on the streets, inspired from within. It's too bad that artists are often not rewarded for their inspirations, but must fall upon feeding "public inspiration" to survive. This is the way we change from being artists (or craftsmen) into tiny factories. Who really aspires to this?
Thanks for your post & for creating a group/forum for the unusual & the quirky & now, like feddabon, I'm most likely darting back into the shadows...
