A new loan for the festive season

It’s been a little while since I started a new Kiva loan.  The last loan to Janet in Samoa was paid back a while ago and the credit has been sitting there waiting for me to get organised..
Since I last made a loan the Etsy Lending Team has got more active and there’s a number [...]

Gocco!

If you’re a twitter follower you might have picked up a while back that I scored a new Gocco set for super cheap and it was PRETTY BLIMMIN EXCITING!
It took me quite a while to gather up the confidence to have a go. It’s all new and scary, you see. But I finally [...]

Not one, but three (and a half..)

It’s been a bit quiet on the ol’ RCS blog as of late.  Partly due to the never ending joys of pregnancy (promise not to bore you with the details..) but also partly due to the busyness of preparing for some upcoming exhibitions.  And it’s about time our lovely readers got to hear the details!
Firstly, [...]

At long last – a new pattern!

It’s been a long time between drinks. I’ve been so busy doing work for some upcoming exhibitions that I haven’t had time to design many new patterns, let alone stitch them up! But when people started hassling me for some fresh stuff I got my A into G!!  I ended up asking around [...]

Home Sweet Home?

Got this awesome email from Sean McFarlane who is studying design in Edinburgh (the Scottish one).

Textile Tragedies

Over the weekend I had the immense pleasure of attending the Melbourne Social Forum.  It was a super inspiring weekend and I made some amazing connections with lots of people.  I was there under the banner of the Craft Cartel to both run a workshop and a stall.
I had a super awesome time with the [...]

Whose Craftivism?

There’s a bit of a debate that’s popped up in the etsy craftivists team which is pretty interesting. There’s a summary and a nice long comment thread going on at Crafting a Green World. Please have a read of that first.

I’ve had my two cents on the email group which I thought I’d share [...]

Handcrafting a new society

One of the biggest highlights of my trip was a super inspiring but way too short trip to Hamilton.
As soon as we arrived, I arranged to meet up with Dr Joyce Stalker whom people might remember from her talk in Melbourne last year. We met Joyce at the school of education where some of [...]

Homes for all

During the fall there were a number of squats all over Sweden as a protest to the housing shortage. It is especially bad in the biggest cities. Inspired by those squats I decided to make this cross stitch, it’s based on a photo from an article about one of them. The text on the banner [...]

Seriously inspirational art

Photographic artist JR has produced these giant photographic portraits of Kenyan women and used the images to create water resistant roofing materials for Kibera, one of the largest slums in Africa.

Being oppressed means the absence of choices

bell-hooks-002

I’m re-reading bell hooks’ Feminist theory: from margin to center right now, hence this small portrait of her. I’m thinking about removing it from the frame & making it into a patch to put on a t-shirt instead (just have to find a suitable tee).

In English it’s called a quadrillion. In Swedish there’s not even a word for it.

julbroderi-023

First post of the new year for me. I would have liked to finish this earlier, but it took me most of December to get the stitching done.

During 2008 the situation in Zimbabwe has gone from bad to… well, catastrophic.

Poster Power

Power to the Poster is this ace new site that has heaps of fantastically designed posters on global issues that you can download for free and print in your hood. Heaps of them would make good stickers too.

We W.A.N.T. No More War

Sorry things have been a bit quiet round here of recent.  I had this crazy election thing going on and then as soon as that was over we skipped over to Vanuatu to spend 10 days working with the local community on economic sustainability issues.  More on that later when I’ve edited up video and [...]

Clever People Rule

Especially clever people that like to hack the crazy world we live in.

Economics without the spin

If you’ve been watching any of the news about the global economic crisis recently you’re probably wondering why all the ‘expert commentators’ are bankers, traders and politicians aka the people that got us into this mess. But if you wany to learn about what this economic crisis is really about and learn about the [...]
