So I hope you’ve all seen the new look Greens website. I think it looks really good and it will be fantastic for election year for people coming to the site for the first time. It’s really easy to find what you’re looking for. Well done to the team that sorted that out!
We’ve also been chugging away with some Facebook stuff and we now have a page up for people to become supporters of the Greens. It’s a great way to be kept up to date with major campaign news. Although it’s best to also sign up through the main site so you can get info about events specific to your area.
Because of course in Aotearoa this year there will be an election! Not sure when yet, some time in November probably. So make sure you’re enrolled to vote. Especially those of us living in other lands. If you are a kiwi overseas you can vote in the election provided you have been home in the last 3 years (and meet all the other normal criteria). Check your details and update your enrolment here!
Finally check the new vid the team have made. It’s worth sending on!
Check out this amazing short vid featuring the infamous Screaming Lulu
An offbeat look at the pressures and expectations for women growing old in our society. Rather than accepting that our faces show character from the lives we have lived and should therefore be celebrated, there is developing need to stretch and paralyze our faces in an attempt to constantly appear 10 years younger.
This film documents my mother’s reaction to these perceptions and expectations. I filmed her talking about how women that don’t appear to follow these rules become invisible in the media (except for specialist marketing such as stairlifts or life insurance). She believes there are few role models or older women to identify with for normal women in their 50′s and above.
Hell hath no fury like a Jewish Mother with a sewing machine!
I think this is brilliantly cool to see craft used as a response to the ridiculous media perceptions of ageing. I agree with her comments entirely! But I won’t spoil it, watch it for yourself.
And I also reckon it’s wonderful that her child has made this film. Absolutely brilliant tribute.
Props Helen
OK check out this amazing party invite I got it the inbox today:
Dear fig-lovers,
For the past 2½ years, the lorikeets and bats have been holding their own debauched celebrations in my fig tree. I was never invited, but this year I’m getting my own back.
Figgtacular 08 is here.
DRESS: You can wear what you like, but I’ll be donning my toga
WHAT I PROVIDE: fig tree, roast leg of goat/lamb, olives, prosciutto, salad, fresh bread, sweet wine etc, Bacchanalian atmos and joie de vivre.
WHAT YOU PROVIDE: figgy recipes & ingredients (if desired), Greek honey cakes or a soft cheese or whathaveyou. Bring a bag if you want to take some home. Also booze or soft drinks, whatever compliments your appreciation of the fig.
STILL NOT CONVINCED? I have made a small video to get you in the mood, which is on YouTube:
Yay Boo! That sounds like such crafty fun. I can’t wait!
OK so this has been on youtube for a while but I had to share it for those that haven’t seen it. Absolutely gorgeous puppet work. And I agree with the comments on the video post that it is a bit sad. But I just love the fact that such a large team of people have put so much work into this. Sure beats going to war.
Props Rosa
This one isn’t quite so fun…
As someone from Aotearoa living in Australia, I get really fired up when I see people back home with such blatant disregard for the future of our environment. Especially in the farming community who KNOW how hard it is for the farming community over here when it comes to water shortages.
I agree that it’s time for Fonterra to get serious about this issue. They obviously understand the importance of a clean environment for the future of their business. It’s about time they started giving the farmers some serious incentives to sort their shit out, so to speak.
So while you were all having a good time on New Years Eve the good people of ALF in Oamaru were defending the earth from a Martian attack.
Lucky for you they won.
Lucky for us, someone filmed it.

We’re fighting for our rights militantly!!!!
Created by some of my favourite people. Deadly work crew!
This is allegedly the work of TV reporter Ali Akram. The singing is atrocious.
But goodness this is funny.
EDIT
I’ve removed this clip because this has caused great offence to many people in particular the people of Tuhoe. See Ana’s comment below and this story over at Te Kaea to understand why. While I don’t agree that this was intentionally denigrating to Tuhoe, in fact quite the opposite. And I have had enough interactions with Ali in the past to know that he is more than understanding of issues of tino rangatiratanga and the history of colonisation in Aotearoa. But it’s not up to me.
Watching this video again I can totally understand why it is seen as offensive. TV3 might be a bit confused and not sure about it cause it wasn’t their intention to offend. But nonetheless they should definitely pull this from their site (they won’t be able to pull it from the internet, too late for that now) and issue an unreserved apology. And it would be nice for Ali to visit. Knowing him he probably will if he’s invited.
Yesterday we braved the heat (ironically) and went to the Melbourne Walk Against Warming. The coppers reckoned there was about 40,000 people and the organisers reckoned 50,000 so somewhere in between probably.
It took me a while to get in to it cause I felt kinda weird being in such a mainstream thing. And I was pretty grossed out by the number of organisations and companies who saw it as a giant marketing opportunity. And that doesn’t even include the socialists.
